Queen Latifah
Dana Elaine Owens also known as Queen Latifah is an American artist and rapper. Queen Latifah's performance in television and music has earned her a Golden Globe award two Screen Actors Guild Awards two Image Awards a Grammy Award six additional Grammy nominations and an Emmy Award nomination and an Academy Award nomination. Queen Latifah is the daughter of the Newark New Jersey schoolteacher and a Newark New Jersey police officer Lancelot Owens Senior was raised and born within Newark New Jersey. Latifah's parents divorced at the age of 10. Latifah was a student at the Catholic school in Newark, New Jersey and was raised in the Baptist Church. Her stage name Latifah which means delicate and compassionate in Arabic was bestowed to her by her aunt when she was eight. Latifah is a very tall 5'10 girl who was in the basketball team of her high school squad. The number she sang was Home from the show The Wiz in a high school performance. Latifah started to beatbox for the group known as Ladies Fresh. Latifah was member of the Flavor Unit - a group of rappers who gathered around the producer, DJ Mark the 45 King. Mark James, aka DJ Mark the45 King, recorded Queen Latifah's rap Princess of the Posse. He sent the recording to Yo! MTV Raps the Fab Five Freddy. The single caught the eye of Tommy Boy Music employee Dante Ross who was signed by Latifah and, in 1988, released her first single Wrath of My Madness.
